This report describes the Home Guard's volunteer members in terms of composition, attitudes and expectations of the Home Guard. The report is based on responses to a questionnaire from volunteers in the Home Guard and SFI's Danish contribution to a major international survey of volunteer work.
The survey shows that Home Guard volunteers are more active in volunteer work than the general population average. Besides their work in the Home Guard, 60 percent of the members are volunteers in other contexts.
The volunteers can be divided into five types according to their reasons for joining the Home Guard: 'traditionalists' want to defend Denmark, 'leisure people' want an active hobby with exercises, 'budding leaders' want training and leadership experience, 'social people' want fellowship and 'the super motivated' have a long list of reasons.
